Liverpool breaks record in the English Premier League

Liverpool expanded the Premier League lead to 16 points and set a new record after Roberto Firmino first-half goal led them to a 1-0 win away to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Coach Jurgen Klopp's team was not at his best and needed to withstand Tottenham's pressure in the second half, but he managed to achieve his 20th victory in 21 league games, this season.

Liverpool's score of 61 points is the highest after 21 games in the history of the Premier League, breaking the previous record of 59 points and Manchester City achieved two seasons ago, and no team has ever surpassed this outcome in the leagues in Spain, Italy, Germany and France after the same stage.

Liverpool dominated the match in the first half and Tottenham needed a fierce tackle by its 20-year-old defender Gavi Tanjanga, in his debut in the starting lineup, depriving Firmino of the score before Alex Oxlide-Chamberlain followed the ball with a volley in the post.

Tottenham, who played without scorer with injured Harry Kane, was much better in the second half as Liverpool rhythm subsided.
But Tottenham did not succeed in leveling the result and Jose Mourinho's team fell to eighth, with 30 points from 22 games after one victory in the last five league games.
